While in bluetooth mode, the headset has to switch to mono audio for the mic to work due to limited bluetooth bandwidth. It is really designed for hands free phone calls and not really anything else. You can fix it by getting a separate mic. The mic doesn’t work when connected by cable. Poor design by Sony. For the low audio though, connect your buds to your phone and in the sony app, assign either the left or the right bud to control volume. Test increasing the volume while still connected to the phone to make sure tapping does increase the volume. I had been using my WH-XB900N for 1 year with no problem, but once I connected two additional Bluetooth paired devices and unplugged my computer's charge cord, I got the same terrible quality others here have described. .
